With Halton‘s increasingly diverse population and raceâ€"related incidents in regional schools, it is imperative the public school board continue the. posiâ€" tion of Race and Ethnocultural Equity consultant, contends Rennie Mohamed, the chairman of the Race Relations committee of the Halton Multicultural Council. "We...are convinced that the work started by the previous consultant for race and ethnocultural equity, must not falter and drop by the wayside," stated Mohamed. Last year the board reduced the number of consultants and coordinaâ€" tors and created new positions of Instructional Leaders with broader based portfolios. The responsibility of the Equity Consultant, which had been a twoâ€"year term contract only and ended last August, went to an instrucâ€" tional leader responsible for the early years and behavioral studies. Mohamed‘s concern is that the OPEN SUNDAYS WE DELIVER TO HALTON PEEL importance of this work will be diluted when lumped into a multiâ€"faceted portâ€" folio. "There is the potential that the priâ€" mary responsibilities of the person who has been assigned the additional duties, will always take precedence." Mohamed told committee members he firmly believes that dollars spent today, will "pay large dividends" in the future. Mohamed labelled the work in this area "heavy, significant and critical" and was disappointed that there was no response to the contents of his presenâ€" tation, an allâ€"encompassing issue, not one that affects a specific number of taxpayers. A 41â€"yearâ€"old Oakville woman was killed in a fourâ€"vehicle collision on the Queen Elizabeth Way at Appleby Line Thursday morning. Deborah McManus, of Wilmot Cr., was killed when her car was broadsided by a tractor trailer in the westbound lane of the QEW at 8:30 a.m., yesterday.
