GROWER DIRECT Fresh Cut Flowers 579 Kerr St. Oakville _ Traditional values are __% important at Texâ€"Styles by Don Wall anette Bird, the owner of Texâ€"Styles, he downtown Oakville textiles and fashion shop, belongs to the old school of doing business. She values cusâ€" tomer satisfaction, making friends and selling only quality materials over some of the modern business methods such as highâ€"pressure sales and getting the cusâ€" tomer in and out of the store as fast as possible. This adherence to traditional values have established her as an institution in Oakville. For 33 years, at three different locations, Texâ€"Styles remains the only place to go for a legion of longâ€"time cusâ€" tomers who want unique fabrics that are right for them. "I love these people," says Bird in a gentle voice. "Some come in just to buy a button â€" I think they come just to see me. Truly, I do think of them as my friends. One thing is certain, however â€" Bird wouldn‘t have made those friends in the first place or have kept them if she didn‘t run a firstâ€"rate business. Texâ€"Styles has eight employees and 3,200 square feet of floor space in the twoâ€"storey building at 111 Trafalgar Road, with a huge stock of cloths and patterns brought in from She says she learned how much her business meant to her longâ€"time cusâ€" tomers when she has a serious accident 10 years ago. There was an outpouring of support for her. "I‘m a shopkeeper yet they care so much. That‘s really neat," Bird comments. 125 Lakeshore Rd., E. She has three main buyâ€" ers and about 20 smaller suppliers, many of whom have worked with her for years, and they pay special attention to supplyâ€" ing her with unique fabrics. "They know what I like," she explained. "They travel Europe to search out new fabric and then come to me with large suitcases filled with samples picked up from the mills. I have a day to go through the suitcase." She chooses the ones she likes on a Sunday and then places an order. Some of the materials come from extra bolts from highâ€"fashion houses such as Yves St. Laurent and Chanel. It‘s fair to say that many of the fabrics sold at Texâ€" Styles will not be found anywhere else in the area. Bird explains that she made two promises to herself upon starting the busiâ€" ness: "One, I decided I would sell nothing but quality fabrics, and two, I would sell fabrics that are unique." Attentive service is another aspect of the business that Bird takes seriously. "We literally take the customer by the hand," she says. "You must make them feel important even if they only need a spool of thread. Service is a very high priâ€" ority here. We work hard to find the perâ€" fect material for the customer. It must suit her. The fabric we assist her in buying must match her colouring." "I hear people say a lot, I always find what I want when I come to Texâ€"Styles," says Bird. "According to protocol, the mother of the bride chooses her outfit first but that‘s not always the case. Sometimes the mother of the groom sees something she likes and just goes ahead and buys it." "The mother of the bride should choose months in advance. She has to know what colours the bridesmaid are wearing. I always remind them that they have to consider the photogâ€" raphy. Mothers are very, very conâ€" cerned that they must compliment the wedding party." "Her style is of her own choosing. When she has chosen her style we assist her in choosing her fabric."
