Having children who participatâ€" ed in the DARE program, McManus was anxious to help save it when funds dwindled, said Carr. When the board of directors perused her resume, they looked no further and hired her for the position in the spring of last year. McManus, who worked on the political campaigns of Oakville Milton MP Bonnie Brown and Burlington city alderman, Mark Carr, regularly injected her warmth and public relations skills into such projects as the United Way of Oakville, Pathfinders and Rangers and most recently, as the executive director position of Halton‘s DARE project, an antiâ€"drug program which reaches hundreds of children throughout the region annually. "She was such an unassuming person," said longtime friend and coâ€"worker Sue Carr. "She was the most comfortable person to be with. She had a solid personality. You knew you could count on her. She was a trusted friend to all of us." Debbie McManus, 41 Warm and caring, a rare individâ€" ual is how her friends described her. She was also an extraordinarily communityâ€"minded person.
