V2 â€" THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Feb. 9, 1994 ETCETERA, etc. ofiers diners chance to esc ADVERTISING FEATURE by Don Wall he restaurant known as TETCETERA, etc. owned by Eddie Tsang is taking conâ€" icious steps to set itself apart from he others in Oakville â€" and you :an taste the difference. Many eateries are content to idopt an identity, choose a name, repare a menu and hope they don‘t zo out of style. Tsang actually did hat in 1985, when he opened 2ddie‘s Place at the corner of Bronte ¢oad and Lakeshore Road in Bronte. t attracted a good clientele, with its ine dining and unique mix of interâ€" rational dishes such as Chicken Milano and Oriental Stirfry, but feared it sounded like too nuch like a roadhouse and finally ast summer he decided it needed a 1ew image. But what new image? He didn‘t want to simply create a new identity ‘hat might trap him. An intense, ntelligent man, he sought to identify 10w a restaurant fits into the busy world around it. After much contemâ€" »lation, he hit upon an image that ‘epresented change and flexibility, idventure and escape. ETCETERA, :tc. would be a restaurant that /// 1 ® @ "‘/; J \)IV "' }J . es 3 #s S # A | §A N\\ l%) STEAK SEAFOOD Wfld.) House i ,////V/W' $ offered surprises, changed with the seasons and did things differently. "ETCETERA, etc. means it goes on and on, there is no boundary," Tsang explained. "It means permitting change." From all indications, ETCETERA, etc. is a great success. On a cold winter Thursday at about 2 in the afternoon, there was still a good crowd in the place. It was obvious many were regulars â€" some called out to Tsang as they left. Tsang explained what he had attempted to do. "When people go out to dinner these.days it‘s a special event," he said. "It‘s rarer than in days gone by. So they want someâ€" thing unique. They want to be proâ€" vided with something rare that they can‘t get at home. They are looking for something more impressive." The â€" first â€" surprise AT ETCETERA, etc. is visual. The exterior has been painted a burnt orange, and inside there are huge murals of exotic scenes in stunningly vivid colours, the creation of Toronto artist Chris Morrison. Right inside the main dining room are dozens of wine bottles on a table. Tsang notes that he has assembled x:)\ f’ difficultâ€"toâ€"obtain vintages and offers every brand by the half , quarâ€" ter or eighth. This is unheard of. "I still believe that variety is the spice of life," Tsang said. "Not everyone wants a full bottle of a wine they‘ve never tried." The excellent service that reguâ€" lars have come to expect has been maintained, and Tsang has also kept the favourites from the old menu; they are listed on the leftâ€"hand side of the new ETCETERA, etc. menu. But on the rightâ€"hand side, diners will find adventure. Tsang promises exotic dishes offered on a seasonal basis, with the break of spring bringâ€" ing a new slate of meals. His current winter menu. includes Carrot Soup, Smoked Duck Breast on Mixed Greens and Grilled Marinated Deâ€"boned Quail â€" on the appetizer list alone. "We‘re not an everyday kind of restaurant," Tsang says, understating the case by miles. Lingerie boutique has right Valentine‘s gift ADVERTISING FEATURE by Don Wall It takes certain subtle qualities to run a successful lingerie store. You have to have tact, to be able to ask a customer who may be timid the proper questions; it takes gentleâ€" ness, to be able to guide a customer through problem situations; and it takes skill, to be able to fit delicate clothing properly and flatteringly. Erika Reisenberger, manager and owner with her husband Peter of the Reynolds Street lingerie boutique The Inside Story, has those qualities in abundance. She and her husband, natives of Vienna, Austria, have been in the business for 10 years and have made a study of the specialty (Ng $ 1 a[enttine s MATE ELEGANCE ESSENTIALS 1/4 Chicken Meal Deal 25 Each $6.95 Each at Takeâ€"Out swiss chalet Amways So Goop For So LITTLE. Erika makes it a point of making everyone who comes through her door feel comâ€" fortable. "An independent lingerie store has to be more professional, more skillful, and provide more service," she noted recently. "You have to provide as much or as little attention as the customer needs. Listening skills are very important."
