10 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER THE OAKVlLLE BEAVER Mar. 2, 19' J‘Iddiéltsraa 1': verything about Chrysler Corporation's new personality- filled neon small car chal- nges conventional wisdomâ€" from way it was conceived, through its ‘ehicle development, to what it deliv- fl'S. " This' 'dare to berdrfferent" attitude is expected to result 1n neon setting -newstandardsforsmallcarsinfunâ€"toâ€" -’drive performance, safety, design, :Ienvironmental sensitivity and overall :yalue. 1' "Neon 1s another example of the nsk- -taking, 'who said we can't do this' Chrysler platform team attitude," said Robert J. Eaton, Chairman and Executive Officer. 1, "Only with our new corporate cul- ture of continuous improvement and platform teams that empower and ishallenge our people could we pro- fluce an afiordable, yet truly desirable, nnique North American small car, without a foreign partner, and at an gfficient investment," Eaton said. 1 Historically, many in the domestic flutomobile industry thought it was impossible to develop and build a profitable small car without a foreign partner. And, in fact, while Neon was being conceived, Chrysler was investi- gating several potential foreign part- ners for its small car project However, during the investigation, it became clear that such a partnership could ulti- mately add development time and cost, two areas Chrysler was targeting for reduction. The team began asking questions and challenging conventional wisdom: Ci Why can't we develop the disci- pline to produce an aflordable North American small car with an efficient investment, and without a partner? DWhycan'twecreateasmallcar that people want to buy for reasons other than its low price? El Why can't we produce a small car that exhibits the same dedication to performance, safety, design and envi- ronmental sensitivity that larger, more expensive cars do? By using a clean-sheet approach, and this "dare to be different" attitude, the team began an extraordinary devel- opment effort. Attacking every cost connected with the development and production of a vehicle, the team established a new discipline that it would carry throughout the program. It challenged everything from shipping costs, to supplier locations, to manu- facturing processes â€" even the num- ber and types of door panel fasteners were scrutinized. From its all-new 2.0-litre, 16-valve engine and five-speed transmission; to its standard dual air bags and available anti-lock brakes and integrated child safety seat; to its trendsetting cab-for- ward architecture, Chrysler expects customers will be delighted by the bal- anceoffeamresfoundinNeonthatare normally associated with large cars. Neon offers a solid Opportunity to capttue an emerging new generation of buyers. Significantly, the most outstanding characteristics of Neon are all in line with this group's likes and dislikes â€" enjoyment of performance, excellent design, affordability, simplicity and environmental responsibility. 1995 Moon Sport §1IlllDatS , Factory Audion. 1 lOnlyAt.
