20 1 Vision Awareness Week â€" March 6-12 Vision and literacy: There's a clear connection his year’s Vision Awareness I Week message, delivered by Peter Gzowski, honorary chairman, is: If you can’t see it, how can you read it? Good vision and lit- eracy â€" there’s a clear connection. Much information has been generated about illiteracy and the problems it causes society. Nearly 40% of adult Canadians have some problem read- ing, writing, and dealing with num- bers. A full 16% of adult Canadians do not have the literacy skills required to perform everyday tasks, such as reading a newspaper, filling out an application, or reading product information on food packaging. Dr. Karen B. Smith - an Oakville Optometrist with special training in children’s vision â€" notes that an obvi- ous, but often overlooked cause of illiteracy, lies in poor viSion. “There :are many sides to illiteracy and an :optometrist can be an important part :of the team to solve the problem,” :said Dr. Smith, “and good vision is Zimportant to develop good reading skills. Parents ‘need to be aware of this connection.” The Canadian Assbciation of Optometrists (CAO) says: D At lease one out of every six children has a visual performance problem; CI Visual performance problems are sometimes difficult to detect, and; El There is a higher rate of vision problems among children with read- ing difficulties. Many adults with poor literacy skills were once children whose vision performance problems went undetected. While good vision is not a cure for illiteracy, it is an ounce of prevention that can help save a pound of cure. Dr. Smith added, “Whatever the cause, eye disorders will not go away by themselves. Parents must take the first step by taking their children for a thorough eye examination, preferably by the age of three.” Remember, March 6th to 12th is â€" Vision Awareness Week!! THE OAKVILLE BEAVER The human mind can be a wonderfully inventive thing, but unfortunately the human body is prone to breakdowns. Thankfully, that inventiveness has been applied to deal with the complications of those breakdowns, a fact that is in ample evidence at Amherst Home Health Care, a retail outlet on Lakeshore Road that sells health supplies to the general public. The sheer ingenuity of the engineers who are working on health aids these days is astounding. Amherst manager Tonia Marcelli has been in the business of selling orthotics for four years but she is continual- ly amazed at what she sees in the latest health-supplies catalogues. “So many people walk by and say, this is an interesting store,” Marcelli, 25, noted recently. “There are a lot of new products coming out every day.” Hanging on the walls and stacked on the ‘shelves of Amherst are dozens of devices serving as tributes to the sharp minds of health care engineers.
