. 2, 1994 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ~COMMENT Jook banners are a very strange group indeed f there is anything more ludicrous than banning books, it is banning them without reading them. One example of this absurdity s emerged in the form of one ctor Doerksen â€" an Alberta nservative backbencher â€" who esented a petition with 800 es in the legislature calling for an on John Steinbeck‘s classic ok... Of Mice and Men. He wants the book, about two ifters during the Depression, nned from high school libraries iming it is profant and inapproâ€" iate reading material for high hool students. Doerksen has admitted he has ‘ver read the book. Never mind that last week was eedom to Read Week. And never ind that, god forbid, high school udents might be able to think on eir own without a bunch of peoâ€" Dear Sir: The goldâ€"plated MPs‘ pension an continues to cost the Canadian xpayer millions of dollars. A recentlyâ€"released report by the actuary of the federal governâ€" ient confirms that the lavish penâ€" on plan currently has an unfunded abilityâ€"a taxpayers‘ IOUâ€"of $12.2â€" illion. What‘s truly amazing is that this aortfall exists despite the fact that ixpayers recently had to pump 158â€"million into the pension plan > keep it properly funded. _ The chief actuary‘s report says mat for every $1 MPs paid towards reir pension plan in 1993, taxpayâ€" y TS TIME... The Halton Board of Education is committed to preparing today‘s students ~â€" for tomorrow‘s challenges. If you have a child who will be 5 years old by December 31, 1994, then now is the time to take action on Kindergarten e L Registration! THE HALTON BOARD OF EDUCATION There‘s a public "Pursuing Excellence in Education Through Commitment and Service" \ K/A/l with caring people waiting to help you, and your child, with this important step. To make registration easy, please bring ple deciding what is best for them. And never mind the schlock that passes for "appropriate" they see everywhere all the time. Never mind all that. The truly mind boggling part of it is that this backbencher has yet to read the book. How can you possibly decide the merits of any work of art withâ€" out experiencing it first hand? It is as though you reject the painting without ever viewing it; or reject the music without ever having lisâ€" tened to it. Is this what the people of Red Deer South can expect of the electâ€" MP pension reform needed now ers had to cough up more than $6. Taxpayers will soon have to put in $10! In fact, within a few years, the cost of the MPs‘ pension plan will be more than 100 per cent of MPs‘ pay. Enough is enough. This outrageous pension plan has to be reformed now and brought into line with what‘s available in the private sector. It‘s high time that the federal government started to lead by example. David Somerville President, The National Citizens‘ Coalition. elementary school nearby ed member who is to take a hopeâ€" fully â€" thoughtful, â€" reasoned approach to his work? Inappropriate, the man says. Well, let‘s talk inappropriate. How about the violent videos that can be found in any corner store? Or, how about just the schlock on prime time television? As to the unbelievably poor to sadly mediocre sitcoms, there isn‘t much that can be said. Except inappropriate sure means someâ€" thing different to Doerksen than it does to me. But do we have incensed backâ€" benchers trembling with rage in the legislature against bad televiâ€" sion or bad videos. No. We have people who admit to not even reading the stuff they want to blindly pull off shelves because they deem it to be inapâ€" propriate. It is absolutely ludicrous. And, in Freedom to Read Week, it is made all the more ludicrous. Still, and perhaps not surprisâ€" ingly, Doerksen does not stand alone. There are plenty of wouldâ€" be book banners who target great writers of all people rather than the stuff that is far more harmful than anything Steinbeck wrote in his life. Last week, again in Freedom to Read Week, one of the most beleaâ€" guered books in the country â€" Margaret Laurence‘s The Diviners â€" once again, became the target for some people just east of Ottawa. Douglas Smith, the leader of the campaign was quoted in the Globe and Mail as distributing flyâ€" ers calling on parents to take action to keep "impressionable teenagers" from being exposed to the book. In this case, the illustrious Smith went further than Doerksen, although it is to be hoped at least Smith cracked the binding on The Diviners before he began his own illogical crusade. After he raised objections about the book being on a reading list, he actually switched his Grade 13 daughter to another class with a different reading list. Now, I would expect this to be a singularly precipitous move to make as a parent of a teenager. I mean, I don‘t think I would have spoken to my father for three years if he had pulled a stunt like that one. And all over a book, of all things. Finally, we have yet to deal with the books themselves. But anyone who has ever read either Of Mice or Men, which I have to admit is my allâ€"time favorite Steinbeck â€" or The Diviners â€" which took me at least three reads before I got a feel for it and grew to love the work very much â€" has got to celebrate the works for what they are. They are simply too good to miss. PuUD Install a memorial bench for your loved ones.
