As a smaller board â€" at least compared to some provincial counterparts â€" Halton is currently faced with proâ€" viding for 43,000 students with plenty more to come. (The comâ€" munity of West Oak Trails alone, for example, will add thousands more.) As a result, Sigbert said trustees agreed with Whiting‘s position. Halton currently has 18 trustees, each paid a stipend of approximately $13,000 a year. Some trustees, such as Oakville Ward 5s Debbie Marklew, have suggested in the past that the honâ€" orarium trustees are paid should beâ€"cut before their numbers. "Boards still have three weeks in which to take action," Cooke said. "I have made it clear to the boards that, if they fail to respond to this opportunity, the provincial government will have to look at lecislating reductions." Last year, provincial legislation covering school boards was changed to permit the number of trustees to be cut. On March 8th Cooke reiterated his position that boards trim trustees to show they‘re committed to costâ€"cutting â€" or the province will do it for them. "We didn‘t feel it was approâ€" priate for the board to downsize," said Siebert. he ball is back in the province‘s court after Halton Board of Education trustees decided it doesn‘t make _ sense to cut their ranks. Accordlng to Oakville Ward 4 trustee Penny Siebert, Education Minister Dave Cooke asked them to review the d [ situation and they did.
