Town honors constable for selfless act After all, on hand were more than just politicians, superior officers and representatives of ratepayers groups â€" the wellâ€"wishers also included children and teenagers eager to meet this modest role model. By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff Michalski‘s heroic midâ€"winter rescue of a drowning girl was something he could certainly be proud of. At Monday‘s reception honoring his individual actions, it was obvious the event was a celeâ€" bration of the community as a whole. I n and of itself, Constable Mike "It‘s nice to see so many memâ€" bers of the community. It‘s a warm feeling," said Michalski, who found all the attention a little bit embarâ€" rassing. "It seems I work with them more than people in blue suits." Youth was a recurring theme throughout the reception. Mayor Ann Mulvale, for example, praised how Michalski â€" the Bronte Village Constable and father of a sevenâ€" week old baby â€" interacts with the neighborhood in an "interâ€"generaâ€" tional way." In February, Michalski, 43, plunged into the frigid waters off Bronte Harbor to save a 17â€"yearâ€"old inmate of the Syl Apps Centre who fled from a social worker and flung herself into the lake. With severe hypothermia a distinct possibility for both he and the girl, Michalski dropped his gun belt, donned a life jacket from a work boat and grabbed the tethered life ring. His rescue simply put into clearer focus the great job he‘s doing, she said, and what the Halton Police Service is attempting to accomplish in the community. "I go into a state of hypothermia just thinking about it," laughed Mulvale _ before presenting Michalski with a special plaque recâ€" osnizing his "courageous action." By the time he reached the teenager she had stopped thrashing. It was obvious, said Michalski, that she‘d lost the coâ€"ordination of her limbs. Reaching the now drifting girl, Michalski applied a rescue hold. Gripping the girl Michalski â€" whose limbs were also dead heavy â€" headed back toward the life ring. Those on shore then hauled them up into the work boat. At the time, Michalski made it clear the rescue was a team effort. Michalski â€" a member of the Halton force since 1975 and Metro Police officer for four years â€" accepted the honor with few words: "The warm reception today certainly takes any chill out of the bones."
