Oakville Beaver Weekend 5Sunday June 13, 1999 Keeping cool can be problem By Scott MacArthur SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER If you're sweltering in the heat this weekend, thanks to the failure of your air conditioner, you're not alone. Some local air conditioning service shops are recording a record number of calls for help. The intense heat wave moved into the southern Ontario area over the weekend, which had many people flicking the switch on their air conditioners for the first time in almost nine months. "We're swamped with phone calls for help," said Oakville Carrier store owner Paul Messenger. "A lot of people took the covers off of their air conditioners for the first time this weekend and when they turned it on full blast right off the bat, they found it wouldn't work for therp in some cases." Carrier is currently booking 10 days ahead. If you have a contract with Carrier, however, you will be serviced within 24 to 48 hours. "The problem can be as simple as someone either forgetting or not know ing how to turn on the breaker switch," said Messenger. Abbey Air is currently booking almost two weeks ahead as a result of a backlog of phone calls. "It's been crazy," said employee Sasha Slupski. "A lot of people don't maintain their units over the winter and when it comes time to first turn them on there can be problems."
