By Michelle Maenck employer breakfast featuring David Foot as the key- Lately, the Oakville Human Resource Centre for Students has been buzzing with excitement as all four Summer Employment Officers work overtime trying to prepare for the excitement that the month of June brings Why all the Excitement you might ask? The Summer Employment Officers are working diligently to prepare for all the festivities that will take place during Hire A Student Week! Between June 14-18, all across the country, Summer Employment Officers will be hosting com munity awareness activities in order to generate as many student jobs as possible. Not only will student centres across the country be trying to generate new jobs, but we will be rewarding all employers who have hired summer students! You might be asking yourself ... Well don't Summer Employment Officers create summer jobs all summer long? Well yes we do, but during Hire A Student Week we concentrate our efforts on going out into the community to thank those employers who have created jobs for students and recruit new employ ers. This is done by educating prospective summer employers on the importance and benefits of hiring summer students. HIRE A STUDENT WEEK SCHEDULE OF EVENTS We will begin the week of Monday, June 14 with a Proclamation from the Mayor and an official flag raising of our Hire A Student flag at Towne Hall. On Tuesday, June 15th we will be hosting a FREE BBQ at Towne Square from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. We are having this FREE BBQ in order to thank our Oakville employers for creating summer jobs! But wait! This Free BBQ is not only for our employers but for students, homeowners and local business merchants as well. We want the whole community to get involved and join us in celebrat ing Hire A Student Week! Wednesday too will be filled with excitement as the Summer Jobs Partnership has organized an note speaker. It is at this breakfast that we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our 1999 employers by including them in this exciting event. T hroughout the week, each Sum m er Employment Officer will volunteer their time for a day at a local non-profit organization. We feel that this is a great way to give back to the community on behalf of students everywhere. So far the line-up includes the Oakville Humane Society, Canadian Cancer Society, M.S. Society and the Lung Association. Here at the Oakville office we will also be com peting with other student offices across the nation to see which office can generate the most jobs and attention from their communities. We will keep you posted as to our progress in this competition. Within the office we will also be holding an employer draw, so that all businesses or homeown ers who create a summer job for a student during Hire A Student Week can be entered into a draw to win fabulous prizes!! As Hire A Student week comes to a close on Friday, June 18, we thought it would be appropriate to go out with a bang. So, together with our stu dent offices in the area, we have organized a carni val to take place at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton. Everyone is invited and it is guaranteed to be a great time. Finding students summer jobs for the summer^ in our #1 priority. During Hire A Student Week expect to see us all over Oakville working hard to find students work. For more information on time, place or loca tion of these events, or to get involved and help us celebrate call us at 845-3601.
