Known as "preferential ballot- ing", the new system will allow vot- ing members to make a first, sec- ond, third and fourth-place selection on their ballots. "Preferential balloting only works when you have more than two candidates. Since we have four, we can use it," said Audrey Cairns, president of the riding association. The four nominees are Mohan Anand, David Bazar, Bonnie Brown, and Bruce Hood. "The purpose of preferential bal- loting is for the convenience of the members because they only have to (cast their ballot) once," said Calms. She said preferential balloting is "a more democratic way" of nomi- nating a candidate because "it encourages people to listen to what all the candidates are saying and then make an informed choice." "We can get through a vote count in about an hour," she said, Under the new system, rioting members have to make a minimum of three selections on their ballots in order for them to be counted in the final results, she said. Members who select less than three nominees will have their ballots removed after either the first or second ballot count. Cairns said if no clear winner emerges after the ballots have been counted - a nominee requires 50% plus one vote to be declared the candidate - the nominee with the least number of first-place votes will be dropped from the voting.
