NEWS Oakville firefighters kept busy during windstorm Oakville Fire Depart ment responded to nearly 50 calls during Friday's massive windstorm. Platoon Chief Bill Forbes said there were three apartment elevator rescues in the Kerr Street and Dorval Road area - none involving injury or medical distress - as well as numerous reports of tree limbs damaging homes and downed power lines causing alarm acti vations at businesses. Thousands of homes and many businesses were without power for much of the late afternoon and early evening. There were no reports of significant injuries in Oakville. However, in ru ral Milton, two Miller Tree employees were killed after they were struck by a fallen tree while working in the Fourth Line and 20 Side- road area. Orangeville resident Adam Sura, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Zach Plat er, 18, of Nassagaweya, was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The fatal incident oc curred minutes after the men cleared branches from the road to allow a trapped school bus full of kids to pass. "If you know his family personally, please extend my deepest condolences to them. He responded with his co-worker to free a school bus that was trapped from fallen trees. Because of them my baby, who just turned 6, got home safely," posted one parent on so cial media. Graham Paine/Metroland Top: Oakville firefighters emerge from a home on Rebecca Street just west of Third Line after assessing damage to the home after a neighbour's 40-foot spruce tree fell onto the roof; Utility crews work to restore power on Lakeshore Road near Coronation Park, where fallen trees brought down a hydro pole and lines during Friday's windstorm. The upper portion of a hydro pole hangs in the air after snapping.
