FirstChoice.com JOHN BKILA jbkila@metroland.com More than $811,000 in federal funding will be tar geted to help highly-skilled newcomers to Halton with experience and education in health care not only find gainful employment in their field, but faster. The funds, which will be spread over the next two years, are going to the Hal- ton Multicultural Council's (HMC) Accelerator for In ternationally Trained Health Professionals pro ject. It is meant to help up to 160 newcomers gain Cana dian professional work ex perience and mentorship in order to "reach their full labour-market potential," according to Kim Jenkin- son, HMC executive direc tor. Oakville MP John Oli ver was at HMC's Oakville headquarters on Speers Road Friday, May 4, after noon to make the an nouncement, on behalf of Patty Hajdu, minister of employment, workforce de velopment and labour. " Our government knows Canada's strength lies in its diversity," he said. "I am proud that our gov ernment is helping to re duce barriers by support ing newcomers as they put their skills to work across communities in Canada." Oliver said in 2016, the unemployment rate among newcomers aged 25-50 years old in Canada was nearly 11 per cent. "There is no question this issue needed to be ad dressed," he said. The HMC accelerator project will provide em ployment training and workshops, one-on-one counselling and 12-week in ternships so participants can gain the accreditation needed to launch them into a career in the health-care sector. Jenkinson called the program an investment. "It is wonderful to see our federal government's commitment to supporting professional newcomers - immigrants are an essen tial investment in Canada's future and a major engine of economic growth," she said. "This kind of an invest ment helps people to launch their careers in Canada and become fully- employed and productive quickly." HMC, which is celebrat ing its 40th anniversary this year and has offices in north Oakville, Milton and Burlington, says it strives to welcome newcomers and prepare them for life in Canada, while also prepar ing the community to wel come immigrant newcom ers and refugees. Its services include counselling and settle ment, community connec tions, employment sup ports, English training, housing and volunteer op portunities.
