"We want it to be special, more of a show," says Cooper. While their young pro­ tegees execute routines around her, Hubbard talks about preparing the gymnasts mentally. "That's the toughest. Physically, they have their formulas, the endurance, tightness." To enrich their focus, the coaches use imagery. "The kids sit down and close their eyes, go over each skill, visualize their routine," explains Hubbard. A tremendous team spirit also exists between the older and younger competitors, she adds. When the older girls were at the Elite Ontario provincial championships, held recently in Cambridge, half of the younger girls made the trip to be in the stands offering sup­ port. "It's a new experience for many of them who are in their first year of eligibility for the provincials," says Hubbard. Regional qualifiers throughout the season helped build confidence and experi­ ence, but nerves don't seem to be a problem for these spunky athletes. Up to 20 hours of week are spent in the Oakville Gymnastics Centre in prepara­ tion for the provincials, time not begrudged by any of the gymnasts. They are focused and dedicated as they work hard at every event -- bars, rings, floor and vault. Every afternoon, after school, they head to the gym, gym bags slung over their shoulder. Most of the girls have been hand-picked from as early as six. Coaches scour members for strength, flexibil­ ity and attitude. "They have to be real go- getters. If they're in a race, they want to be first." Gymnastics being a mechanical sport, an immense knowledge of body position is also important, she adds. At the recent Wym Gym Invitational in Montreal, nine- year-old Katey Ishikawa or Spitfire as she's known, caused quite a sensation plac­ ing first in a category o f 72 competitors. She loves gymnastics because it makes her strong and flexible and at the upcom­ ing provincials, she hopes to have fun and do her best, sen­ timents echoed by all the petite gymnasts as they pre­ pare to perform before home­ town crowds. Gymnasts like 10-year-old Carly M cMillan and Melissa Melia, 11, both have provin­ cials experience -- Melia placed fifth on the floor last year and Carly won a bronze on vault and was fifth, over all. Both can't wait to have family and friends on hand as they compete. After the amount o f work the kids have put into their sport, day after day, and with such tremendous enthusiasm, to have the opportunity to showcase their talents in their own town before loved ones, is quite an experience, says Hubbard. The B of M 'Bolts will play host to last year's Canadian Soccer League (CSL) elite champions Olympic Flame Zeus from Scarborough. The Lightning are coming off an excellent 1998 outdoor campaign in which they were the South Region Soccer League (SRSL) elite league champions with a record of 10 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw with 41 goals for and 14 goals against. Both the goals for and against were league records, as well as having the league high of nine shut-outs. The 'Bolts also won the prestigious '98 Robbie International and the '98 Erin Mills 'Eagle Cup.' Oakville were also finalists in Sarnia and semifinalists in the NIKE Cup and the Brampton International. The team has high hopes for themselves again this year, but they realize that nothing will be easy. There will be 10 teams playing in the OYSL this year, with CS Azzurri and Dixie being the early favourites. "Every game will be important and nothing can be taken for granted because the level of competition is so high. This year will be a chal­ lenge that's for sure!" commented coach Peter Bekker who is in his fifth year with the 'Bolts. "Success has followed this team, but these young men have really worked for everything they have won, to date. Our style of play is ball control with a strong emphasis of team play. I am really proud of our young men." Returning to this year's team are captains Chad Aboud (centre midfield) and Steve Marinic (sweeper); Rob Stein comes back for another year as the team's keeper. The defensive backs are David 'Kufo' Beduh (right back), Curtis Marchildon (right back), Peter Kuchta (left back), Mike de Vaal (left back) and Joe Hrebik (stopper). The midfield is patrolled by Lee Bekker (right) and Drew Macdonald (left). Adding power to the attack are strikers Nick Servedio, Brandon Pimentel and Mark Misiak. New to the team are Stephen Hill (centre mid- field), Shawn Caspar (striker) and Glenn MacKay (midfield). "These new players have raised the quality of this team from last year and big things are expected from them," added assistant coach Joe Ferreira. The Lightning will play in the Ontario Cup this year, and the winner will represent Ontario at the Canadian Club Championships in Alberta this fall.
