Firefighters help rescue livestock from bam fire Despite the "spectacular" nature of •Wednesday's north end bam fire, no people or livestock were injured, says the Oakville Fire Department. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at Avonlea Jerseys family farm on Sixth Line north of Bumhamthorpe Road. A call came in of smoke and when the first crews arrived on the scene, said Assistant Fire Prevention Officer Dave Robertson, they found the bam ablaze. The fire fighters immediately assist ed the owners rescue a number of expen sive milking cows from within the lower area of the structure. There were approx imately 30 cows plus a number of younger heifers inside. At the time of the rescue the fire was restricted to the straw storage area on the second floor. This allowed time for the animals to be extricated. Given the straw and dry wood involved in the fire, how ever, the blaze quickly engulfed the bam. "It was entirely consumed," said Robertson, who explained that because of the total destruction of the bam no cause had been determined at press time. Total damage is estimated at $300,000. Several cats were injured and taken to the Oakville Humane Society. Robertson said crews remained at the scene until early Thursday morning to ensure that the fire was extinguished.
