F10 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 7,1999 Spring Style Fashion ____ T he Bay Oakville Spring Fashion Forecast By Nienke T. Jonkman ADVERTISING FEATURE S pring Fashion '99 has evolved from last fall, with a subtle mix of soft colours and an explosion of acces sories, according to Julie Magner, national fashion direc tor at The Bay. Both men and women want a wardrobe that is versatile--easy to mix and match, for work or for play. Casual romance makes its mark with very natural textures and patterns dominating, with just a hint of drastic colours or patterns for a little fun. Demin is even showing up in career styling, with casual as the over riding theme in the business world. Utility chic has also take the fashion world by storm with military gear and sports-influ- enced looks being the leaders of the pack. Ladies Popular items to add to your wardrobe include the everlast ing twin sets, cargo pockets, long skirts, drawstrings, 3/4 sleeves and cardi's and tanks. Ladies, if you don't already have some of these in your wardrobe, it's time to update! Although subtle, there is a plethora of colours to choose from. From aqua and azure to melons to com silk and mint green, colours will mix well with what you already have in your closet. Even hosiery is subtle, with nude and sheer top ping the list of popularity. The fun this season is in the accessorizing. Pay attention to your jewelry this spring as the neckline gets all the attention. Illusion looks are strong with layers, chokers, collars and bibs to match every neckline in your closet. From pearls to wire and stones to wood, your individual ity will stand out in your choic es. Oversized brims and decora tions on hats for spring with multi-coloured straws and fab rics and lace. Hats will be pop ular and are available in all kinds of shapes, sizes, textures and styles. A perfect topping to a perfect outfit. While dressing, don't forget to match accessories such as sunglasses, umbrellas and hand bags! Oversized and composed from woods, metals, plastics and more, fashion accessories are coming back with full force. The look is fun and can be as wild or mild as your mood intends. Men This season men become more open to fashion and more sensitive to elegance. Casual business looks are in demand, as is a flexible and interesting wardrobe. The colour palette for men focuses on blues like navy and sky, and is complemented by greens such as hunter and fem. Lighten up these looks with the base colours of grey heather, oatmeal, chino and stone or flashes of white. Layers are in for the casual elegant look, with knit vests over white T-shirts and draw- string multi-pocketed cargos. To complement the vests, make sure your closet has some fine gauge cotton sweaters. Pants are twill in shades of khaki, chino and stone, in soft washed cotton. New this season is the cotton "golf jacket" which along with a "nylon pop-over" will complete the must-have list of your wardrobe needs. Pay close attention to your dress shirts and ties this spring too, gentlemen! All shades of blue and light grey make up the popular tonal looks this season. Make the statement with textures and pat terns, or a little iridescence in your tie. Your closet Enjoy the warm weather looking your best, and look your best by staying on the cutting edge of spring fashion. From Olsen, the European-based international women's apparel company, it's a season that brings a modem edge to classic clothing. The long, fitted jacket: The newest jack et is fitted and in the same length as a short, above-the-knee skirt. The jacket also teams with wide-cut trousers for a look with European edge. This season's suit is in grey, one of the hottest colours for spring and according to colour forecasts, will still be with us for fall. For a fresh look, wear the suit with stretchy lycra tops and cotton T-shirts. Terrific twinsets: Twinsets are an up-to- the-minute trend but as the seasons change, you can't beat the versatility of a twinset for trans-seasonal dressing. A perennial favourite, Olsen's twinsets feature trim details and classic, textured patterns for today and for seasons to come. Look for fine, luxurious knits in viscose, silk and cotton. When it's chilly, cover up but as the temperature rises, toss the sweater casually over your shoulders. Olsen's signature look is fashion with ease, edge and European flair. Always in fashion but nver out of style, Olsen's total wardrobe concept is based on the use of high-quality natural and state-of-the-art fabrics and distinctive colour groups.
