C10 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 21, 1999 G O L F G U I D E * r \ r Oakville says good-bye as host to Bell Canadian Open . . . but provision has been made to have the popular celebrity event held at Glen Abbey a t least six times over the next 20 years (including this year) Oakville has prided itself on being the home of the Bell Canadian Open for more than two decades, attracting in its better years a gamut of top PGA Tour stars like Tiger Woods, Dave Duval, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Price, John Daly ... well, the list goes on endlessly. That's all about to change, though. The tourney is leavin' home. But not in any hurry, and it will come back often in the foreseeable future to its hallowed home at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Glen Abbey Golf Club. First and foremost, it is coming back this year in its usual time slot, revving up on Labour Day Monday (Sept 6) and winding up, as usual, on the Sunday (Sept. 12). And the way Mike Weir has been playing lately, we may have our best Canadian threat to win it in a good long time (if we could be so bold as suggest ing he'll pencil it in on his calendar). Since 1977 the Bell Canadian Open has been played in Oakville at Glen Abbey every year but two (1980 and 1997). Sparking the national tourney's sudden wanderlust, of course, has been the sale of Glen Abbey to ClubLink which was sealed on Feb. 10th after months of negotiations. The metro-based company has been busy expanding its golf empire, particu larly in the metro area, and including Oakville. They have taken over the golf dome, and its adjacent nine-hole Academy Course (which is now open -- phone 847-3663.). And they're well on schedule for next month's opening of posh new Rattlesnake Point just outside Oakville's boundaries in Milton. "We're well beyond our estimates for the number of members," said ClubLink spokesperson Tim O'Connor. They forecast 200, but have over 700, he said. Incidentally, he said Glen Abbey Golf Course opened up April 12th. The regular fee will be $225 but until May 24th it will only be $115. Glen Abbey was sold by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) to help fund its new master plan to boost golf in this country. Instead of just one stadium golf course, the RCGA intends to have at least three across the country -- one def initely in the metro area and others in Montreal and Calgary. The RCGA has its head office at Glen Abbey and they've made provision to remain there for at least three years (and as long as five years) until its new metro area facility is up and running. Provision has also been made to have the popular Bell Canadian Open held at Glen Abbey at least six times over the next 20 years (including this year). And that includes four times over the next 10 years. The price tag for Glen Abbey was $40-million in cash, and in addition ClubLink of Canada is also chipping in an extra $825,000 over 10-years to two golf youth development programs. Specifically, they've pledged $500,000 towards golf scholarships for up and coming Canadian players and $325,000 to the national Future Links program. There was more than just golf in the deal. The 240-acre property also includes internal lands suitable for luxu ry residential condominiums and a con ference centre/hotel as well as 11 acres of adjacent residential development lands. 1999 Greater HamittoiVHatton Championship tour schedule The 1999 tour schedule for the 16th annual Greater H a m i l t o n / H a l t o n Championship has been unveiled. The junior tour was formed in 1984 for the purpose of pro viding a forum for junior golfers (18 years of age and under) to demonstrate their talents through competi tion with their peers. It was the first of its kind and now there are least 11 other similar programs in the province. "As our commitment to the youth involved in junior golf, the Wilson Junior Golf Tour is pleased to announce the introduction of annual scholarship program. We want to be in a position to encourage both education and sports through this new and excit ing program," said Doug McVeigh, the 1999 tour president. "The success of this tour continues because of the dedication of four dis tinct groups: the experienced hard working volunteer board of directors, the supportive tour stop golf pros, the loyalty and endurance of the young competitors and their parents, and, finally our committed sponsor." He also added that Wilson has extended its sponsorship of the tour for another five years, commencing in 2001. The defending champion is Brent McClung of the North Halton Golf Club. McLung was one of four junior golfers chosen by the RCGA to repre sent Canada in Japan this June and was one of eight junior golfers chosen by the OGA to represent Ontario in South Carolina this past March. "Wilson Sports Equipment is com mitted to supporting Junior Golf and has a number of initiatives in place to give ■ something back to the game," says Michael Francis, pro golf sales manager for Wilson. "The Wilson Junior Golf Tour would not be the same without the generous support of local courses. In appreciation Wilson is chipping in each 1999 tour stop with a set of Wilson 1200 Wide Tip golf clubs and a Techno Smart golf bag. The intended use of the set is to help raise funds for each club's junior program through its use in a raffle. The Wilson Junior Golf Tour is a seven event tour to decalre the junior golf champion of Greater Hamilton/Halton. The tour's qualifying round will be held Sunday, June 20 at Oak Gables Golf Club in Ancaster. Qualifying is open to anyone 18 and under as of Sept. 1, 1999, who resides in, or belongs to, a golf club in Hamilton-Wentworth or Halton.
