MARY'S SCHOOL left: A plaque to commemorate St. Mary's School, the first Catholic school built between Hamilton and Toronto in 1860, was unveiled at a special ceremony and blessing May 8. In attendance were former St. Mary's students, including (front row from left) Isabel Shepherd, Betty Cobbold, Diane Shalton and Marilyn Cumming, (back row) Miachel Johnson, Father Con O'Mahony and Terry Murphy, who snapped a photo before the plaque's unveiling. The event, attended by Halton Catholic District School Board students, was one of many taking place during Education Week (May 6-11). Middle: Cobbold and Shepherd identify former classmates after the unveiling of a new historical plaque, located in the parking lot of St. Andrew's Church, where the school's entrance once stood. The school was demolished in 1987. Right: HCDSB Director of Education Paula Dawson speaks of the former school's importance in the community at the time while Oakville students look on.
