As part of its comprehen- sive coverage of the provin- cial election, the Beaver in- vited each of the Oakville riding candidates to weigh in on a particular issue. This week, their responsesThis week, their responsesT are listed in reverse alpha- betical order. TRANSIT: Congestion on our roads and highways is at a maximum. If elected, what solutions would you and your party bring to the table to alleviate gridlock in the GTA? Lesley Sprague • NDP An NDP government will continue to build tran- sit across Ontario. As for Oakville, we need to clear up Hwy. 403 and the QEW now. Commuters deserve nothing less. Traffic jams on these two highways cost hundreds of millions of dol- lars of lost GDP every year. We will continue toWe will continue toW study high-speed rail to bring modern, reliable and affordable inter-city rail service to southern Onta- rio as soon as possible. The NDP will accelerate the electrification of re- gional express rail (Smart- Track) and the Union-Pear- son Express, and will con- tinue to expand and im- prove GO bus and rail service. Kevin Flynn • Liberal No government in the history of Ontario has in- vested more in transit and transportation than the Liberals. Over the next 10 years, we will invest $79 billion in the largest build-out of public transit infrastruc- ture in Ontario's history. Let's not forget that the PCs spent 10 per cent of what we are spending to- day on transportation and infrastructure. They made us pay for the GO train with property taxes. In Oakville, the Lake- shore West GO line will see significant increases in ser- vice, including electrified service at 15-minute fre- quencies between Union Station and Burlington and express service to and from Union Station for commu- nities between Oakville and Hamilton. With faster and more frequent service, and increased parking at GO stations, drivers will make the choice to use pub- lic transportation more of- ten. We've also invested inWe've also invested inW HOV lanes to promote ride sharing and almost $650,000 for more bike lanes and other cycling infra- structure in Oakville. The Doug Ford plan to cut billions will result in cuts to health care, educa- tion and transit. As a To- ronto city councilor, Ford voted for the cancellation of LRT projects that were already funded. His announcement to cut the gas tax will under- mine transit projects as it is used to build and improve local transit - all effective ways to ease congestion. Oakville deserves bet- ter. Emily De Sousa • Green Ontario's transporta- tion system doesn't work for people or the planet. for people or the planet. f We need a new transpor-We need a new transpor-W tation plan for Ontario and we need to be honest about how we are going to pay for it. Our plan starts with bet- ter land-use planning, re- designing roads and streets with the safety and conve- nience of all road users, and scaling up investments in public transit. The Green Party is the only party being honest about how we are going to pay for transit. We will start by restoring opera- tional support to local tran- sit and implementing an in- tegrated transit plan in the GTHA - and beyond. We will increase fund-We will increase fund-W ing for public transit by $1 billion to $1.5 billion per year over projections in the 2018 budget and will fund 50 per cent of the operating costs of municipal transit systems.
