Graham Paine/Metroland COMMUNITY The loss of a family member weighs heavily on people of all ages. Locally, the Lighthouse for Grieving Children is there to assist children in their grieving process. Chelsea McDermott knows first-hand what it's like to lose a loved one after the death of her 18-year-old brother. She now volun- teers her time at Light- house for Grieving Chil- dren in the hopes of offer- ing much-needed support to those in need. Annually, Lighthouse puts on a run to raise mon- ey for its ongoing opera- tions. In 2017, the run land- ed on June 3 - McDermott's brother's birthday. To ho- nour his memory, she took all the tips she earned working at a local bar and donated them to the not- for-profit organization. The support she re- ceived from patrons was overwhelming, with dona- tions totalling $7,600. After this heartwarm- ing response from the com- munity, McDermott is at it again. This time, she's not alone. Two coworkers at the Lion's Den, located on the second floor of the King's Arms, will donate the tips they collect work- ing at the pub, located at 323 Church St., May 25-27.
