5| O akville B eaver | T hursday,M ay 24,2018 insidehalton.com Doug Ford is promising to drop gas prices by 10 cents per litre if elected Ontario premier. The PC leader stopped by an Oakville Fourth Line gas station on Wednesday, May 16 to discuss the rising cost of fuel and what he hopes to do about it. "Everyday I hear from the people who are fed up. Fed up with being gouged at the gas pumps. Fed up with the price of gas as it keeps going up and with it the price of goods and ser- vices with no end or relief in sight," said Ford. "We all know that pay- ing for gas is not a luxury, it is not a perk, it is a neces- sity. Higher gas prices means less money for some of the lowest income earn- ers in the province because carbon taxes, like all taxes, punish low income fami- lies the hardest." Ford lashed out at the Liberals and NDP stating that under them gas prices would only increase. He singled out the Lib- eral's cap-and-trade pro- gram, which added around 4.3 cents to the price of one litre of gas. The system is intended to curb carbon emissions in the province and brought in about $2 billion in revenue last year. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath would keep the carbon pricing program in place if elected, but said an NDP government would regulate gas prices. Ford said the situation at the pumps would only get worse if either the NDP or Liberals are elected on June 7. "Make no mistake. This is just the beginning," said Ford. "If the Liberals or the NDP get the chance gas prices will soar. They will hit $2 a litre in Ontario by next summer. Mark my words." Ford said the PC party is the only thing standing between Ontarians and higher gas prices and stat- ed that if elected he would reduce the cost of gas in this province by cutting taxes. "We're going to elimi- nate the Liberal/NDP cap- and-trade, stop the Liber- al/NDP carbon tax and re- duce Ontario's excise tax," said Ford. "By doing so the PC gov- ernment will reduce gas prices by 10 cents a litre. That is a reduction of 10 cents a litre on gas for ev- erybody in Ontario. These are real savings - savings that will leave more money in your pocket." When asked how he would make up the reve- nue lost from cutting these PROVINCIAL ELECTION Doug Ford visits Oakville, pledges to reduce gas prices by 10 cents a litre Ford says NDP or Liberal government will raise gas prices to $2 a litre by next summer DAVID LEA dlea@metroland.com "Everyday I hear from the people who are fed up.
