Supporters of net neu- trality said the repeal would allow ISPs to do things such as block rival applications, slow down competing services or offer faster speeds to customers willing to pay extra. There are also larger fears of ISPs being able to control what people see and do online. Internet providers have promised the U.S. public their Internet experience would not change. Oliver said he believes a growing digital economy makes not having net neu- trality a threat to young en- trepreneurs. Back in March, the local MP was at Sheridan Col- lege's Oakville campus speaking about Motion M-168 to its computer tech- nology students, where he noted net neutrality was a freedom that couldn't be taken for granted by Cana- dians. Passage of the motion in the House of Commons af- firms the federal govern- ment's desire to preserve a fair and open Internet for Canadians free from unjust discrimination and inter- ference, according to Oli- ver. "Preserving an open in- ternet and the free flow of information is vital for di- versity, education, entre- preneurship, innovation and the continued econom- ic and social prosperity of all Canadians," he said. Oliver noted defending net neutrality was more than just the protection of the ability of Canadians to access online services. "We are defending our democracy. We are uphold- ing principles as funda- mental as the freedom of expression and the free- dom of the press," he added. "The Internet has thrived due to net neutral- ity principles of openness, transparency, freedom and innovation. This needs to continue." - With files from David Lea, Metroland Media CANADA l Continued from page 25 Government says goal is to preserve a fair, open Internet for Canadians
