The spry senior said she went down on her bottom on Tuesday and medical staff wanted to take her to the hospital. She promptly told them no way. She had family coming from Nova Scotia to cele- brate with her, a big party at the Oakville Senior Citizens Resi- dence and a large family celebra- tion at Swiss Chalet. A hospital visit was not part of the plan. Instead, she was the centre of attention on Friday at her resi- dence when friends and family and several politicians came out to wish her the best and help her blow out candles on her huge cake. The celebration, featuring live music brought several politicians, friends and family, including herfriends and family, including herf son Jim Cosens, from Dartmouth. She was especially pleased to receive written greetings from the Queen, after all, she's watchedQueen, after all, she's watchedQ many royal weddings in her time. Eileen (nee Monk) was born in 1913 in Detroit, Mich., and moved to Harrow, ON, when she was 12. She had one brother who was killed in the Second World War in Apeldoorn, Holland in 1945. Her mother was an artist and a pho- tographer who taught in Detroit. Eileen married Phillip Cosens in 1933 and was an active member and past-president of the lodge, Daughter of England. She moved to Burlington in 1986, a decade after Phillip's death and then to the Oakville Seniors Citizens Residence in 2003. Eileen has four children: Phyl- lis, Margaret, James and Robert, ranging in age from 70 to 82. She also has 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and nine great, great-grandchildren. She says "I've got no idea why I've lived this long," she laughed. After some thought she speculat- ed that she made her 105th birth- day because she never smoked and she never held a grudge. "Once in a while, I'd have a small glass of wine, but that was in my younger days," she quipped. Longevity is in her family, though: her mother lived to be 96 and her grandmother also made it into her 90s. Although she's been legally blind for 30 years, and requires hearing aids, she's been healthy most of her life and never suffered a single broken bone. She says she used to live on a farm as a youngster and she'd getfarm as a youngster and she'd getf around by horseback. Her hus- band drove a Model-T Ford when they were first married, but she never drove. She said she enjoys playing sol- itaire with large print playing cards and large-print word finds, which she has numerous to choose from since they're a popu- lar Christmas gift from her many family members.family members.f She used to play euchre back in the day.
