But the Oilers held on the 10th overall pick in the NHL draft and got the defenceman they coveted when Oakville's Evan Bouchard was still available. "He's a really heady player and those players play even bet- ter with better players," Oilers' general manager Peter Chiarelli said on the team's website. "Physically he's big, he's got a very good shot, he's a terrific passer, his hockey sense is really terrific. We had him really high." Bouchard was rated as high as sixth in the draft by some out- lets, including the International Scouting Service, but slipped back with a number of other players after some teams took lower-ranked players to address a positional need. "It's a whole lot of excite- ment," the former Oakville Ranger told Oilers TV. "It's a great organization. I see a bright future for the Edmonton Oilersfuture for the Edmonton Oilersf so I was really excited." Playing with the London Knights, Bouchard had 25 goals and 87 points in 67 games to lead all Ontario Hockey League de- fencemen in scoring and finish-fencemen in scoring and finish-f ing eighth overall in the league. "He did a lot on that team with not much," said Peter Chiarelli. "And he's been in that league three years now. He's a mature kid with a mature body. I know he wants to play in the league next year so we'll see." Bouchard was also named the MVP of the Canadian Hockey League's top prospect game and was a finalist for the OHL's MVP and best defenceman awards. The 18-year-old was the sec- ond Canadian player selected in the draft, behind only Barrett Hayton, who went fifth overall to Arizona. Bouchard is the high- est drafted Oakville player since John Tavares was taken first overall in 2009. As for the prospect of one day playing with Connor McDavid, Bouchard said, "It's one of the first things you think about," hefirst things you think about," hef told Oilers TV. "You see him on all the highlights and you see what he's capable of, so it would be an honour to play with him." Bouchard will take part in the Oilers development camp from June 25-28 in Edmonton.
