Emergency services were called to the Oakville Power Boat Club docks off Water Street in downtown Oakville around 1:20 p.m. for reports of the marina on fire. Fire crews were there in min- utes as the Water Street docks are mere metres from the rear of nearby Fire Station 3 on Randall Street. Oakville fire platoon Chief Bill Forbes said the first arriving crews encountered a docked boat fully engulfed with flames. Twenty firefighters used water and foam to battle the inferno. The owner of the boat was not in- jured, as he was onshore when the fire erupted. Due to the intense 40 C heat and humidity, firefighters had to be rotated to a rehabilitation ar- ea so they could rest and take in water to replenish their body flu- ids. In also battling a fuel and foam spillage into the creek, fire- fighters along with officers from the Halton police marine unit in- stalled a floating absorbent dam across Sixteen Mile Creek to pre- vent the spillage from reaching the lake. The fire department said it was too early to determine a cause or damage estimate, how- ever the large power boat was considered a complete loss. The Canadian Coast Guard was notified of the incident. Flames engulf a 30-foot boat docked at the Oakville Power Boat Club Saturday afternoon.
