"She felt that if you follow your heart, things will take care of themselves ... Nothing phased her. She was very much in the present." Her twins were born when she was 41 and she was diagnosed with can- cer not long afterward. The family did its best not to obsess about the diag- nosis, Anthony said. They'd refer to the disease as a "health challenge" and always believed she would beat it. For Tanya, the worst part was that she had to stop breast- feeding the twins becausefeeding the twins becausef of her treatments. "That bond was so im- portant to her." Since Tanya's death on May 1, Anthony is now a single dad to four kids who are grieving the loss of their mother in differ- ent ways. He says Sienna and Mackenzie, the old- est, have been brave and strong. "They're just like Tanya," he said. "I can see her in them." He said the family's strong Catholic faith has helped, reminding them that even though they can't see her, she is al- ways with them. The three-year-old twins still call for their mom when they're upset, but Jensen has also said he now knows his mother lives in his soul. "I know she's around helping us," Anthony add- ed. In addition to family and friends from her youth in Oakville, and the community from Mary Mother of God Church, Tanya also had a vast net- work through GoodLife Fitness. She taught clas- ses at several Burlington and Oakville locations, but mainly the gym at Tra- falgar Road and Dundasfalgar Road and Dundasf Street East. Colleague Crys Master- son describes Tanya as someone who was "born to be a mom because nothing phased her ... There could be chaos around her all the time and she was smil- ing and happy. "She was so warm and considerate, always checking in and reaching out to see how you were doing, no matter what was going on with her." Masterson organized an online auction, which wrapped up June 27, to raise money for the fami- ly, hoping to help buy An- thony more time with the kids before returning to work. The community was quick to come up with all kinds of items, includ- ing esthetic services, mas- sages, time at summer camp and a year's supply of bread. Overall, more than $10,000 was raised to support the family. "Hearing about a story like this, it touches peo- ple." COMMUNITY Auction raises more than $10K lContinued from page 30
