MIKE KAPTEIN COUNCIL DECISION ON CANNABIS MUST BE INFORMED, SUPPORTED BY FACTS RE: Don't expect cannabis retail stores in Oakville any- time soon if bulk of council re- elected, Oakville Beaver, Aug. 23 issue I read with great disappoint- ment the article about the bulk of council choosing the opt-out option offered by the provincial government, regarding the pri- vate sale of cannabis in Oak- ville. For our mayor and the bulk of council to choose this route is a mistake and I feel their de- cision is based more upon per- sonal feelings and fears than fact. For as long as this council has been together, I have heard the mayor state on many occasions that deci- sions are fact-based. However their position on this issue is anything but. To the councillors who are undecided and wish for more information before coming to a decision I offer my congratula- tions. This is where council as a whole should be - open to infor- mation that would provide a full and fair opportunity to make an informed decision. Cannabis retailers will have to be licensed and regulated, al- beit regulations are yet to be determined. But suffice it to say these will undoubtedly be onerous. Is this not enough for our town? Have the mayor and council- lors really investigated how li- censing and regulation would apply? Have they looked at the studies and research conduct- ed in jurisdictions south of the border, such as Colorado and Washington? What about re- search on how cannabis works, describing cautions and bene- fits? Have they spoken with medical patients who have ben- efited from the use of this plant? Have they investigated the controls that are in place at the dispensaries currently in operation - albeit illegally? Have they talked to anyone presently working within this industry? Is council as mistrustful of the LCBO or cigarette retail- ers? Why should cannabis be treated differently than alco- hol and tobacco? Making decisions based up- on a lack of actual data but rather just personal feelings is not how council decisions have been made previously. It is clear from your article that much has yet to be considered by those who appear to have made up their minds. I hope this will cause them to recon- sider. DOUGLAS B. MCCARTEN KUDOS TO CONST.
