Robinson emphasized he will finish the current term of council, which ends Nov. 30, before retir- ing. The Ward 1 councillor said helping people has al- ways been what he en- joyed most about the job. He said a town council- lor is closer to the people than any elected politician noting these are the indi- viduals who visit with constituents in their back- yards and really form a di- alogue to see how they can help. "That's why they phone you. They don't call you to say hello. They phone you because they want your help and they expect you to respond," said Robin- son. "I do respond ... I don't always get them what they want, but I try to help them and I have helped a lot of people." Robinson said a town councillor faces a multi- tude of issues, some more complicated than others, and he really never knew what he was going to face next. After 36 years on coun- cil there is no shortage of accomplishments Robin- son is proud of. These include things like establishing a park on Hixon Street and a tennis court in Lakeshore Woods. The Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cul- tural Centre and the devel- opment of the South Shell Park lands into a popular recreational space were other successes Robinson saw to fruition. Robinson also worked with students from St. Dominic Catholic Elemen- tary School to create the Bronte Veterans Garden, which honours fallen Ca- nadian soldiers. Canada's then minister of national defence Peter MacKay visited the site in 2012 and the area is home to memorial plaques to Oakville native Col. Geoff Parker and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. Robinson's political ca- reer began long before he came to Oakville. He was previously in- volved in politics in Hali- fax, N.S. and St. John'sfax, N.S. and St. John'sf N.L. Locally, in addition to his work on Oakville coun- cil, Robinson's resume in- cludes chairing the Bronte Creek environmental steering committee, act- ing as a founding member of the former community advisory committee to Pe- tro-Canada and the Lake Ontario shoreline algae action committee. He also chaired the Oakville Terry Fox Run for 25 years.for 25 years.f Robinson is a founding director of the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame and past director of the Halton Multicultural Council. Before becoming in- volved in politics he spent 30 years in the financial and entrepreneurial in- dustries. In 1991, Robinson was nominated and elected by his peers to be a life mem- ber of the Association of Kinsmen Clubs and in 2009 he became the 11th Cana- dian recipient of the pres- tigious Kin Award known as "Hal Rogers Fellow." He is also a life member, past president and om- budsman of the Minor Oaks Hockey Association and in 2012 was awarded the Queens Diamond Jubi- lee Medal. Although the end of his days on council may be in sight Robinson said that doesn't mean he's ready to completely say goodbye to town hall. "I'm going to stay in- volved with the town in different capacities," he said. "I have no idea specifi- cally what they might be. There's a couple of thoughts I'm entertaining, but I'm not sure yet. I want to stay involved with the town. I can't think of a bet- ter thing to do." Beyond that Robinson said he plans on spending more time with his family including his wife Marie, his three children, his 10 grandchildren and his three great grandchil- dren. "I have appreciated the 36 years I've been given to help the constituents of the Town of Oakville," said Robinson. "I hope I've given them some happiness through the meetings we've had to- gether and the different projects we've worked on. If they want to talk to me about anything else they are still welcome to call me." NEWS LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS LONG Continued from page 15 SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT INSIDEHALTON.COM
