The announcement was made by Prime Minister Jus- tin Trudeau Friday morn- ing, Aug. 31. In his new role, Oliver will support the minister of health in fulfilling her man- date letter, which includes improving access to neces- sary prescription medica- tions, addressing the devas- tating opioid crisis, and the promotion and defence of the Canada Health Act. The Oakville MP has a strong background in health care and health policy, work- ing in both the public and private sectors in Ontario. Before being elected to the House of Commons, he served more than 20 years at Halton Healthcare Services, culminating in the building of the new Oakville Trafal- gar Memorial Hospital dur- ing his time as president and CEO. Oliver has also served as an assistant deputy minister in the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Since becoming a member of parliament, he has served on the House of Commons standing committee on health, and as chair of the Health Research Caucus.
