Modeling itself after parliamentary procedure, the White Oaks camp fea- tured a total of 16 rounds of debate - with topics rang- ing from funding for the arts, the government's ob- ligation to divulge news about the world ending in three days and abolishing Batman's No Kill Policy - over the course of the week. Mixed in were various exercises designed to boost students' argument-form- ing ability and hone their debate-related skill set. Said Saleh, "Posture, hand gestures, your tone, even knowing when to pause... these can have a huge impact on how you're judged. "I'm much more confi- dent now. I'm able to think more creatively and criti- cally and have learned to work as part of a team. I know these things will help a lot in whatever career I pursue." Whether it was sea- soned debaters polishing their skills or shy novice campers finding their voice, Guthrie said this summer's program was perhaps the best to date. "The quality of student performances; yeah it was a really good group." With her enthusiasm clearly showing through, Wadhwa said she thor- oughly enjoys every aspect of debate - whether it be the adrenaline that creeps in at competition time or the meticulous prep work in- volved. "So many of us (debat- ers) are constantly reading books and keeping up with current events. I'm so much more informed now I love that part of it."
