Imagine if Leonardo Da Vinci had not been able to afford his first paint set or if Mozart never had the chance to sit down at a piano. These individuals are successful because of one foundational experience - they were given a chance to explore. So many children in our community have gifts and talents in sports, music and the arts but they go undiscovered and underdeveloped. At KSM, we invest in these children by giving them that opportunity. Our facility includes two music rooms outfitted with drum kits, acoustic and electric guitars, a bass guitar, bongos, djembes and keyboards. Our music rooms are open during our youth drop in hours, and free music classes are offered weekly for students. In another area of the building KSM staff lead art classes where children and youth can learn the fundamentals of drawing, painting and sketching. KSM also runs sports and games programs for a variety of ages and hosts a basketball camp in partnership with the YMCA with a strong focus on development of basketball skills. These opportunities give children who lack financial means the opportunity to try new things and explore their passions. At KSM there is a place for the arts, and for sports. There is a place for children and youth to come and explore. You never know if there could be a Da Vinci living in our midst. No. 897106845RR0001 bey, our official plan can be bust- ed on any street. Battles like this are the reason why I've support- ed maintaining a strong legal de- fence reserve for the town so wefence reserve for the town so wef can afford to defend our town." The Save Glen Abbey Coali- tion also weighed in on the $5.3- million figure spent in defence of the golf club. "We feel Glen Abbey must be preserved for future genera- tions. It's part of Oakville's and Ontario's history and we hear from residents that they're hap-from residents that they're hap-f py with the current zoning of the land as green space and heritage lands," said Bill McKinlay, spokesperson for the residents' group. "Save Glen Abbey is glad the council is taking a stand and making the investment to save it." Mayoral candidate Julia Han- na said saving Glen Abbey is not a partisan issue, but rather an Oakville issue. "I am committed to saving Glen Abbey. I'm not privy to the legal opinions that the town has received. I expect that the town has canvassed all options avail- able and that they are pursuing the course most likely to suc- ceed," she said. "Any appeal to the legal sys- tem is inherently uncertain and expensive. As mayor, I'm com- mitted to saving Glen Abbey and if legal action fails, I will rally community support to gain the attention of the premier to this issue." Mayoral candidate John McLaughlin called the amount of money going toward legal fees in the Glen Abbey matter unac- ceptable and a waste of money. He argued a different legal strategy involving fewer lawyers could have been (and can still be) undertaken, which would have cost a lot less. Using in-house legal council instead of outside law firms would also reduce legal costs by 500 per cent, he said. McLaughlin called for the town to be more transparent with regard to what it is doing to protect Glen Abbey and said that if elected he would work to en- sure Glen Abbey Golf Club does not suffer the same fate as the Saw-Whet Golf Course, a parcel of Bronte Road land that is being redeveloped to make way for a subdivision. Continued from page 46 STORY BEHIND THE STORY To date, $5.3 million has been spent on lawyers and consultants in the fight to preserve Glen Abbey Golf Club. Oakville's mayor says the cost is comparable to saving green space and limiting growth to what fit in north Oakville.
