Iroquois Ridge Community Centre Southridge Room 1051 Glenashton Drive, Oakville, ON During his second year of university, Ilyas felt something wasn't right. "I was paranoid, running around the streets trying to find something to do," he said. This was Ilyas's first episode of psychosis, which he later learned many people experience for the first time while in high school and universi- ty, causing serious im- pact to future education plans. "I reached out to men- tal health services on campus but there was a four-month wait," he said. Ilyas's condition con- tinued to worsen until he was finally admitted to hospital and was first di- agnosed with psychosis and eventually with schizoaffective disorder. "I ignored my diagno- sis at first but quickly be- came afraid of the person I was becoming," Ilyas said. "It was difficult to adjust to the medication but I knew I needed it, along with my other cop- ing tools, to reach my goals, graduate and be- come independent." Now working in the community as a peer sup- port worker, he will share his story at the 11th annu- al Peace of Minds Walk in Oakville on Sunday, Sept. 23. The Peace of Minds Walk brings the commu- nity together to raise awareness and funds for the Schizophrenia Soci- ety of Ontario (SSO), an organization providing vital services and pro- grams to people affected by schizophrenia and their families. SSO pro- grams include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Psychosis training for caregivers and profes- sionals, a support line and family support groups. The five-kilometre walk kicks off at 10:30 a.m. at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park and in- cludes remarks from Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton, MPP Stephen Craw- ford and Dr. Darina De- Souza, a psychiatrist at Halton Healthcare. "Raising awareness about mental illness and letting people know it is possible to live well with it is a cause near and dear to my heart," Ilyas said. "I am looking forward to telling my story because I want to share a message of hope. Everyone de- serves peace of mind." To register for the Peace of Minds Walk, vis- it peaceofmindswalk.ca.
