A minister in the United Church who chose to raise her son alone has now writ- ten her own memoir. Dorinda Vollmer's most difficult journey was through her work as a min- ister, witnessing the strug- gles of the people of the Ro- seau River Indian Reserve in Manitoba. Growing up on Trafal- gar Road in Oakville, Voll- mer's new book Without Reserve unveils the lessons she learned along her jour- ney. It gives hope to those who are at a crossroads in life. She said people she has met have touched her heart and soul. She hopes her stories will touch people and empower them to em- pathize with those who struggle. She will hold a book signing at Lusk Hall, St. John's United Church in Oakville on Saturday, Sept. 22, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Speeches will be held, fol- lowed by a reading and book signings, along with beverages and desserts. Vollmer, who's a classi- cal pianist, (her aunt Lou- ise Thompson taught piano lessons in Oakville for 30 years) says that music, art and poetry have sustained her in the happiest and darkest times. With determination and courage, she often chose the more difficult path in life in favour of being true to herself. In Without Reserve, the first part of her memoirs, those who find themselves at a crossroads will see that anything is possible. "I did not have an easy life and it was not easy to write this memoir, but I be- lieve there is much in my story that can help other people in their struggle in life and in their journey," she said. Born in Niagara Falls in 1944, she was raised in Oak- ville, later lived in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and now resides in Bowmanville. She received her bache- lor of music degree from the University of British Columbia in 1971 and her master of divinity from Victoria University in the University of Toronto. She graduated from Emmanuel College and was ordained in the United Church of Canada in 1976. She has been working with the Alderville First Nations since 2013. She wrote two other books as well: Reflections to Ease the Pain in 1990 and More Reflections to Ease the Pain in 1991. Without Reserve covers her early memoirs, and her first years in ministry at the Roseau River Indian Reserve in southern Mani- toba from 1976-1980 and a year in Winnipeg before re- turning to Ontario in 1981.
