If you own a mutual fund, this column might be of partic- ular interest. There are endless num- bers of mutual funds to choose from and most in- vestors are aware of that. What most investors are not aware of is how often mutual funds are closed down. When a mutual fund is closed those assets are transferred to another mutual fund. Your invest- ment remains but it does so in a different mutual fund. fund. f We know from researchWe know from researchW done at the University of Chicago that mutual funds with a poor perfor-funds with a poor perfor-f mance record are the funds most likely to disap-funds most likely to disap-f pear. This topic has been discussed in past col- umns. Just think if we had that luxury when we were in school. Perform poorly on a few subjects and then just eliminate those sub- jects from your tran- script. According to Standard and Poor's Index Verus Active (SPIVA) Canada scorecard from year- end-2017, mutual funds disappear at a fairly high rate. Standard & Poor's re- port, titled "Survivor- ship," provides the details. After five years slightly over half of Canadian funds disappeared. Fundsfunds disappeared. Fundsf operating in the United States had over a quarter of those funds disappear after five years. Most people hear the importance of investing for the long-term. That be-for the long-term. That be-f comes more difficult when the underlying funds you invest disap-funds you invest disap-f pear at an alarming rate. That makes it difficult to monitor the long-term performance success of fund managers and fundfund managers and fundf companies that offer a large selection of funds. Fund reporting might convey attractive perfor- mance figures. The obvi- ous conclusion is the fund manager has expertise, therefore you might con- sider investing your mon- ey there. Historic performance results are meaningless unless you are able to view the results of all funds managed during that peri- od. An investor deserves to see the performance re- sults of all funds, includ- ing those with poor per- formance that have beenformance that have beenf pulled from the market.
