Janice Lochan, who has called Oakville home since 1967 and has voted in every election between then and now, recently found out she was not registered to vote when her husband, Frank, received his voter card in the mail and she did not. "We then went onto the voters list and found she was not on the voters list," said Frank. "We went through the process to get her regis- tered, but in going through the process we made inqui- ries about how the voters' list was compiled and why she wasn't on it." Frank said Janice's name appears to have come off the list because Janice recently sold her property and moved into Frank's property. Both are now voicing concerns that numerous in- dividuals in similar situa- tions across town may also have been left off the voters' list for this election. They said this could spell trouble for those who depend on the information on the voter registration card and could even deter some people from voting. "You've got to figure out what the voting date is, you've got to know where to go and have the correct identification with you," said Frank. "People with the town said you can look up this in- formation online, but weformation online, but wef have a lot of seniors in this town, many of whom I'm sure do not go online. Our concern is the voters' list seems to be incomplete and nobody is taking responsi- bility for it." Jane Courtemanche di- rector of strategy policy and communications with the town said there is no large issue of people in Oakville being left off the voters' list. She said the Municipal Property Assessment Cor- poration (MPAC) collects information on all occu- pants of a home including the registered homeowner, children, spouses, tenants, etc. The town then creates a voters' list based on this pre- liminary information. "Unfortunately the vot- ers' list provided by MPAC is not always 100 per cent ac- curate, particularly for peo- ple who have moved or for tenants," said Courte- manche. "The information on how to get on the voters' list is on our website and I would en- courage people to go to the website to input their infor- mation online or they can contact the clerk's depart- ment by emailing elec- tions@oakville.ca or by calling 905-815-6015." Courtemanche said the town updates the voters' list up to Friday, Oct. 19.
