For many of us the holiday season is filled with anticipation of special gatherings, traditions, gifts and celebrations However, for many in our community, this time of year is difficult and painful. Did you know that over 18,680 people live below the poverty level here in Oakville? For them, it is a daily struggle to provide the basic necessities for their families. During the holiday season their financial struggles are magnified, often leaving them feeling hopeless and inadequate. Ward 6 Town and Region- al Councillor and Acting Mayor Tom Adams present- ed a proclamation during the Monday, Nov. 5 council meet- ing about the Ontario cam- paign, which is intended to raise awareness of the vio- lence many women continue to face in Canada. Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton was unable to attend due to illness. During the proclamation, Adams noted that the Town of Oakville recognizes that no level of violence is accept- able and the elimination of violence against women must be an absolute priority. He further stated that it was every woman's funda- mental right to live in safety and security in their homes and communities, free from the threat of violence, and said the town stands in soli- darity with abused women and supports them. The importance of com- munity groups like Halton Women's Place, which pro- vides shelter and assistance to abused women and their children, was also refer- enced. "Whereas governments and institutions have a pri- mary responsibility to dem- onstrate leadership and pro- vide resources to achieve equality and to end violence now, therefore I, on behalf of Rob Burton - Mayor of the Town of Oakville, do hereby proclaim November as Wom- an Abuse Prevention Month in Oakville," said Adams. There is no shortage of reasons to raise awareness of and seek solutions to gender- based violence. According to Statistics Canada, there were almost 25,000 sexual assaults re- ported to police in Canada in 2017, which is up 13 per cent from 2016. This statistic does not capture the vast number of sexual assaults that go unre- ported each year. Members of Town council also joined Halton Women's Place representatives and supporters in raising the Halton Women's Place flag at Oakville Town on Nov. 8 in recognition of Woman Abuse Prevention Month.
