I have no doubt it does. Ford contributes significantly to our economy, as do many other businesses in our di- verse community. Fortu- nately, we continue to be a prime destination for new investment and opportuni- ties." In November 2016 Ford and Unifor, the union group representing the Oakville plant's workers, negotiated a contract deal that saw the automaker invest $600 mil- lion into its assembly plant in Windsor and $100 million to upgrade the assembly plant in Oakville. Both the federal and pro- vincial governments invest- ed $100 million in 2004 to help convert the Oakville plant into a flexible manu- facturing facility.facturing facility.f Recent government in- vestments in Ford were also announced in 2017. Ford's history in Oak- ville has not always been a smooth one with 500 job cuts announced at the Oak- ville plant in 2008 due to var- ious economic pressures. The Oshawa plant ap- pears to have had a rougher recent experience. In addition to layoffs the Oshawa plant, along with GM's other Canadian facili- ties, received billions in bailout funds from the Ca- nadian government in 2008. GM itself filed for bank- ruptcy protection in 2009. In 2016 the Oshawa plant's very survival was one of the key issues dis- cussed during contract talks between GM and Un- ifor. Unifor representatives allege the impending Osha- wa plant closure violates that 2016 collective agree- ment. Unifor Local 707 presi- dent Dave Thomas, who represents the workers at the Oakville plant, weighed in on the situation in Osha- wa. "Shame on General Mo- tors. Local 222 had language that they bargained in 2016 that it was status quo until the next round of bargain- ing (fall of 2020)," said Thomas. "We're just two years in- to it and they come and say they're restructuring and closing Oshawa and three or four plants in the States ... live up to your obliga- tions." When asked if Oakville auto sector employees should be worried Thomas said he was hopeful the union's relationship with Ford is better than that part of Unifor's relationship was with GM. "Is anybody's job ever se- cure anymore?" he asked. Thomas noted Oakville's autoworkers are second to NEWS FEDERAL, PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS INVESTED $100 MILLION IN OAKVILLE PLANT IN 2004 Continued from page 7 See OAKVILLE, page 37
