Visit www.travelalerts.ca/TisTheSeason ceived a peace medal in the adult category for her work in advocating for equality and environmen- tal rights. She is also the founder of Global Friends, a Cana- dian charitable organiza- tion run entirely by volun- teers that helps remove barriers imposed by pov- erty and supports or- phaned and vulnerable children around the world. Georgia Apostolopou- los received a peace medal in the youth category. When the young girl learned there were many people in Oakville who don't know where their next meal is coming from she started Bank on Bellies in 2017 with a goal of col- lecting 2,000 non-perish- able food items to help those living in poverty. Since then, Georgia has collected more than 8,000 food items and raised morefood items and raised moref than $25,000 for this cause. Georgia said she does what she does because she feels no one should have tofeels no one should have tof fear what the next day willfear what the next day willf bring and if that day will end with the person un- able to provide food for themselves and their fami- ly. "I envision a little girl walking down Cornwall, hand-in-hand with her fa- ther. Coming home from school, skipping and laughing with a ginor- mous smile on her face. Her dad looking down at her with a smile, but his eyes are filled with sad- ness, remembering when he was a little boy without a worry in the world," said Georgia. "Looking at these two you would assume they were just like you and me, never knowing that dad's eyes are filled with worry that he cannot provide food for his daughter.food for his daughter.f Driving by these two you would never guess that they depend on food banks to provide them with their meals each day. That's the thing about poverty. It is not always visible, but it is there." Those present also heard from Melody Hos- saini, founder and CEO of InspirEngage Internation- al. The world-leading ex- pert in people develop- ment and social enterprise talked about her efforts to help people reach their full potential. Hossaini offered advice given to her by Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi who noted that to jump really far first you have to back up and then launch yourself forward. "She said that the diffi- culties we face in life, and we all face them, are the steps back that we take that allow us to go fur- ther," said Hossaini. "That's what I had to learn to do with my story in that the things I went through - I had to utilize all of that to allow me to go further than I would havefurther than I would havef gone had I been privileged and had everything and not gone through any- thing. I think that's what we have to do is utilize dif- ficulty to be part of our sto-ficulty to be part of our sto-f ries."
