This question is no doubt in the minds of many in Oakville after news broke Monday, Nov. 26 that the General Motors plant in Oshawa would cease pro- duction in late 2019. The move, which the company says is in part due to its desire to focus on elec- tric and autonomous vehi- cle programs, will directly affect the more than 2,500 workers currently em- ployed by the Oshawa plant. The news also raises questions about what is on the horizon for Oakville. The Oakville Ford As- sembly Plant has been a pil- lar of the community since it opened in 1953. It currently employs ap- proximately 4,600 people. When asked about the plant's status and what the future holds a representa-future holds a representa-f tive was positive. Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton offered the following statement when asked about the Oshawa plant clo- sure and about Ford's fu- ture in Oakville. "I am deeply sympathet- ic to Oshawa and the 2,500 employees who will lose their jobs as a result of GM's Oshawa assembly plant clo- sure in 2019.
