Luke 5: 1-11 Here you will find Church the way you wished it could be! Friendly people, Great Music Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit! Sometime in April, you're going to be digging in your drawer of shame and come across the list. You know the one - theYou know the one - theY new year's resolution list you created the last Decem- ber. You made a nonverbal, pinky swear pact contract with the universe and fully intended to give life im- provement a go. Alas things mysterious- ly got deferred like so many other best intentions re- quiring follow-through. It sits beneath some crum- pled Canadian Tire money, dead batteries, loose chop sticks, a purple broccoli elastic, a gift card with $1.75 on it and 17 cents in pennies and nickels - part of the de- ferred landscape.ferred landscape.f Seeing it gives you an in- stant sense of regret com- pounded by a feeling that time, once more, has elud- ed you and the path to the new you was never taken. How come? How do you make a list you want to work on let alone complete? Everybody puts too much on the list and the things they do put on are guaranteed non-starters. Nobody puts quick-to-tick- off stuff on the list like "eat organic mozzarella" or "trim the cat." No, it's more like: lose 162 pounds, learn to levitate or become a You- Tube star - lofty stuff not thought out and just think- ing about which makes the lister break out in a cold sweat. They are usually things requiring a world of little actions laid out methodi- cally in order to be achieved; they are things requiring what is called a plan. So, approach your list like a plan. Step one: one goal per page, not 50. On the top of page, state a goal like "Learn Italian." Step two: on the bottom of the page, state realisti- cally how your life will change for the better once you achieve said goal, like live a more social life, enjoy travel and understand op- era and menus. Step three: under the goal, start listing the steps you need to take one by one to move you inexorably for- ward, like sign up for a class, book a trip six months hence, join a new group. More than anything, en- joy the becoming and not just the end goal. It'll bring a little therapy to your life.
