The Town of Oakville wants to hear from the public on speed limits and traffic-calming op- tions. Town staff are prepar- ing a review of the traffic- calming process and posted speed limits, as well as an update on the potential use of photo ra- dar, and are asking resi- dents to share their thoughts through a short online survey. "We value your opin- ion and encourage you to provide your input on what measures will help keep our streets and neighbourhoods safe," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "Your feedback will al- so help shape the town's traffic-calming program, which aims to address is- sues that include exces- sive speeding, traffic vol- ume and more." Town staff said many Oakville residents have expressed concern over speeding and driver beha- viour. They said the Highway Traffic Act allows munic- ipalities to designate ar- eas with a speed limit lower than 50 kilometres per hour. As well, traffic-calm- ing measures such as roundabouts, speed cush- ions, raised medians or radar speed display signs can be effective in ad- dressing issues related to vehicle speed and overall neighbourhood safety. Photo radar may be another tool available to the town, in the future. The device uses radar and cameras to detect speeding vehicles in des- ignated community safe- ty zones. The Town of Oakville is working with other municipalities and the Ontario Traffic Council to investigate the imple- mentation of photo radar. The online survey is available until Feb. 18. The survey and more information about traffic calming is available at Oakville.ca.
