Peter Watson MBA, CFP, R.F.P., CIM, FCSI Jennifer Watson MBA A text by Skorulski that was read in court indicat- ed she was in a position to help the University of To- ronto with its case. Skorulski also wanted Scordino to sign a docu- ment that would remove her from liability in that lawsuit. The Crown said Scordi- no went to Skorulski's apartment on Feb. 13, 2017, on the pretext of signing this document but mur- dered her instead. Scordino was arrested and charged with first-de- gree murder on April 11, 2017. He pleaded not guilty. Over the course of the trial the Crown laid out what Stevenson called "overwhelming" evidence of Scordino's guilt. Three witnesses, in- cluding Skorulski's long- time friend David Hodgins and Scordino's girlfriend Maureen Iuliano, identi- fied Scordino as the manfied Scordino as the manf seen in security footage from 205 Lakeshore Rd.,from 205 Lakeshore Rd.,f W., walking with Skorul- ski toward her third-floor unit at around 8 p.m., on Feb. 13, 2017. Skorulski was never seen alive or heard from again after that evening. The Crown said a search of Scordino's Fort Erie home on April 11, 2017 resulted in the discovery of .32-calibre ammunition and a firearm registration certificate for a .32-calibre Iver Johnson revolver that had belonged to Scordino's late grandfather. Stevenson noted a search warrant executed at Scordino's Hamilton workplace, Modern Eleva- tor, on April 20, 2017 ended with the finding of an Iver Johnson revolver hidden behind the ceiling tiles of a vacant office. The weapon had the same serial number seen on the firearm registration certificate at Scordino's residence and testing by Shane Staniek, a firearm and tool mark examiner with the Centre of Foren- sic Sciences, found that two bullets found embed- ded in a couch and in the floor of Skorulski's condo-floor of Skorulski's condo-f minium unit were fired by that Iver Johnson. A garbage bag featuring Scordino's fingerprints and containing clothing similar to that worn by the man in the condominium security footage was also found at Modern Elevator.found at Modern Elevator.f Stevenson said forensic testing of this clothing re- vealed the presence of gun- shot residue. Blood belonging to the victim was also found on some of this clothing and on the gun. This testing, which was carried out by Centre of Forensic Sciences Foren- sic biologist Sobia Malik, determined there was only a one in 320 quadrillion chance this blood could be- long to someone else. Scordino's DNA was al- so found on the gun with testing reporting a one in 12,000 chance it could be- long to someone else. The Fort Erie man's DNA also tied him to the hoodie within the garbage bag, with testing noting chances of that DNA be- longing to someone else being one in 35 quadril- lion. Stevenson said texts setting up their meeting to sign a document that would remove Skorulski from liability in the law-from liability in the law-f suit - something Iuliano testified Scordino said he would never do - and Scor- dino's bringing of the gun to Skorulski's apartment showed the murder was planned and deliberate. Goldkind called no wit- nesses and presented no evidence, but argued the Crown failed to prove Scordino's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. He questioned some of the forensic evidence, ar- guing the findings were subjective and raised the possibility that the pres- ence of the gunshot resi- due on the clothing was a result of accidental con- tamination by police. He pointed out there was no blood found in Scordino's vehicle, which he said should be there if someone in blood-covered clothing had used it. Goldkind also hinted that someone may have set Scordino up, noting that it made no sense for some- one who had nearly two months to get rid of evi- dence to simply leave it ly- ing around his workplace. Scordino's conviction for first-degree murderfor first-degree murderf carries an automatic life sentence. A sentencing hearing will be held on March 29 to determine the length of time he is ineligible for pa- role.
