"BurlOak strives to - at least once or twice a season - inspire the next generation of theatre- goers, where we are going to see a younger demographic, and also the parents in attendance," he said. Shrek the Musical will be run- ning April 10-14 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts - it promises to be a heightened version of the much-loved movie. "You'll see it in a whole differ- ent, expanded light, and it's a lot of fun and a bit of a spectacle too." Shrek the Musical is a cast of 41, with close to 100 costumes, such as the four-person dragon, a Gingi puppet, and Lord Far- quaad who plays his part on his knees. A lot of the cast are regulars, including Paul Wilson, who plays Farquaad, and Kevin Fos- ter, who plays Shrek. Shrek the Musical is a play for all ages, focusing on universal acceptance of others in spite of appearances and first impres- sions. Shrek is an ogre - a mon- ster who uses symbolism to com- pare himself to an onion. He talks of having layers and how there are many different sides to him, but most people never look far enough. Shrek demonstratesfar enough. Shrek demonstratesf that no matter what the world says about you, you can make a difference. Indeed, Shrek proves that "it's what inside that counts." Directing, Cadeny adds, has been great, with a seasoned cast that sees the actors coming pre- pared to work and make great choices. "I direct with a collaborative process, where actors can ex- plore their impulses and charac- ter development," he said, add- ing that he'd like to thank every- one involved in community thea- tre. "There's so many people behind the scenes - the costume team - and they're not easy cos- tumes, the textures, the depth and dimensions, the set people ..." BurlOak Theatre holds a 50/ 50 draw at each of its plays that benefits a local charity; for this presentation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Halton and Hamilton is the benefactor. With more than 2,400 children they work with, organizers were sure that this was a good bet. The play will run Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Apr. 10-13) at 7:30 p.m., with Sat- urday and Sunday (Apr. 13 and 14) matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 regular seat- ing. Suitable for ages four and up. Call the Oakville Centre Box Office at 905-815-2021 for tickets.
