(pG(pG( )pG)pG Thu: 4:00, 6:45, 9:30 For children's book au- thor Tina Powell, her love for storytelling started in Grade 2. The Oakville resident recalls raising her hand to read a story she wrote in front of the class after no one else did. "I put up my hand and thought, well, I'm going to give voices to the charac- ters. I don't know what came over me, but I did that. The teacher laughed and the kids liked it," Pow- ell told the Oakville Beaver. That's when she knew she wanted to become a writer. Her passion led her to work in advertising and journalism. It was when she had her kids that she started taking an interest in writing a children's book. "Life changed as I knew it," she said, sharing that the first children's book she wrote - Hi, I'm the New Baby - was inspired by her son holding his baby sister in the hospital; it was fol- lowed up by other best- sellers including Peter's Poofect Pet, Fernando's Fun-tastic Friends, Freddy and the Blue Jays and more. Her latest children's pic- ture book is Brandon's Big, Bad Barfday. It tells the story of a lit- tle boy who wants a brand new bike for his birthday. When he doesn't get what he wanted, he decides to use his own money to get it - with his little brother and older sister helping him along the way. The book has a surprise ending that shows Bran- don eventually taking the path of being selfless. "It teaches kindness and gratitude ... and why self- reliance is better than self- entitlement," Powell said, adding that it was an im- portant message because of the mean culture that's so prevalent in the world today. The good news is kind- ness is contagious and it can be taught, the McMas- ter University Arch Award recipient said. "It's one thing to say it, it's another to demonstrate it. I wanted Brandon and his brother and sister to role model acts of kind- ness, so that children will hopefully see them and it will be contagious," she said. Powell, who received a Certificate of Recognition from the Government of Ontario for her significant contribution to children's literature, has raised mon- ey through her books for different causes and chari- ties, including the Canadi- an Red Cross, Children's Aid Society, Kids Help Phone, and more. For her eight book, Pow- ell is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sister of Hal- ton and Hamilton. She'll donate $2 from each book sold during the launch period - first three months of sales - to the or- ganization. "Big Brothers Big Sis- ters would be a perfect fit because they're all about the kindness of strangers and role models taking on little brothers and sisters to help them through tough times," Powell said. "It's very important to give back." The book launch of Brandon's Big, Bad Barf- day takes place on Satur- day, March 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Tribeca Coffee Company, 174 Lakeshore Rd. E. in Oakville. LOCAL AUTHOR'S LATEST CHILDREN'S BOOK IS SPRINKLED WITH KINDNESS Bestselling children's author Tina Powell of Oakville is launching her latest book Brandon's Big, BadBarfday at the end of the month. Two dollars from the sale of each book at the launch is going to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton and Hamilton.
