Ingrid Goetze photo ANIMAL TALESLETTER TO THE EDITOR The attached photo shows a coyote, leisurely - and unafraid of the hu- mans around it - eating a squirrel at 6:30 p.m. on March 31 on my front lawn in southeast Oakville. This is a disturbing oc- currence. We have lived in this house for over 30 years and it wasn't until about six years ago that we started seeing coyotes roam our neighbourhood. They are not afraid of us, but I am afraid of them and don't agree with the town's attitude that we need to learn to live with them. They are a danger for my small dog (even in our fenced backyard) that I keepfenced backyard) that I keepf vaccinated, under control and licensed as per munici- pal laws. The coyotes are danger- ous predators. They were not roaming and hunting freely in this neighbour-freely in this neighbour-f hood, in downtown Oakville or around Bronte a decade ago. They have not turned up in these established Oak- ville areas because of devel- opment there or territory encroachment. Why has Oakville adopted this toler- ant attitude regarding them at the expense of its resi- dents? I know I am not the only Oakville resident who feels this way.feels this way.f LAURIE MAVEAL, OAKVILLE I AM AFRAID OF INFLUX OF COYOTES IN OAKVILLE A coyote in southeast Oakville is photographed eating a squirrel in March.
