Walsh, co-founder of Oakville's Mosaic Press and a longtime professor in the Animation, Arts and Design department at Sheridan College, just re- leased the second instal- ment of his memoirs, enti- tled Roughin' it in Kanata, Eh! The 158-page book fol- lows the publication of his first volume, Roughin' it in the Bush, a selection of memories from his first 12 years in England's Shep- herds Bush, and fills in some of the "missing pieces from those early years" - his school days, chums and colleagues, his sporting ex- ploits. He was born in 1943 in Hazlewood Castle, York- shire - a maternity hospital during the Second World War - and his "first play- grounds were bomb sites and smog filled journeys around the Bush" in the 40s and 50s. The sequel is also "filled with the travels and tra- vails of an outsider seeking friendship and love," as Walsh recounts his early years in Canada where he arrived in 1956 as a young teenager. "I came to the conclu- sion after the first volume was published that there was so much that I had missed," writes Walsh on the opening page. "Self-doubt and ego be- gan to surface repeatedly. How important were my memories and did I have a voice worthy of sharing with others. I began writ- ing more names, places and events. Mere frag- ments that made me laugh or cry became my new list, trapping me in a creative conspiracy, which de- manded more words and pictures to fill out my jour- ney. "I was encouraged to keep going because family, friends and strangers told me that they remembered those early days on their own streets with similar emotions after Volume 1. My ego was satisfied and the creative juices began to flow again." Roughin' it in Kanata, Eh! is interspersed with old black and white photo- graphs and Walsh's poems. Walsh began his pub- lishing career with Mac- millan in the 1960s and worked in the business in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.; Mosaic Press, operat- ed with his friend Howard Aster, has been promoting local authors for more than 30 years. "I have so many stories that can be fleshed out and I think that Volume 3 will become my years at West- ern University in the early 1960s. I want to call it Rev- ellin' in the Hallowed Halls or ... In the Halls of Aca- deme." He promises more of the same self-deprecating hu- mour. "It's fun and most of my friends are amazed that I remember so much that they had forgotten. Fake truth has no place in my story, but some embellish- ment is always possible." After a rocky start, the boy from Shepherds Bush said he can safely say that he is a survivor, and Cana- da has been good to him. Because his family has been "challenged" with cancer, proceeds from the sales of Roughin' it in Ka- nata, Eh! will be donated to a local cancer charity.
