That is why the Oak- ville chamber is pleased to see that town council has signalled, through its recent release of the draft economic development strategy, its commitment to providing a foundation upon which businesses can prosper. Prior to last fall's mu- nicipal election, the Oak- ville chamber released the Roadmap to Business Success. The platform highlighted four pillars identified by our mem- bers through our advoca- cy surveys: business competitiveness, trans- portation, recruiting and retaining talent, and in- novation. The recently released draft economic develop- ment strategy addresses many of the chamber members' priorities that identify opportunities where the town can sup- port existing businesses while promoting the long-term health of our local economy. Through research and community consultation, of which the Oakville chamber was part of, the strategy underscores key areas of concern to the business community such as re- ducing red tape, improv- ing transportation ser- vices, and recruiting and retaining talent. On behalf of our mem- bership, the chamber will continue to work with Oakville's leaders to urge them to take a proactive approach to reducing red tape by implementing changes in policy that would make it easier to do business in Oakville. For example, we believe that a reform to planning ser- vices policies that would streamline the applica- tion process and empow- er city staff to focus on achieving client goals would foster a business supportive environment while encouraging eco- nomic growth for the bour, with companies at- tracting a total of 65 per cent of workers from out- side of Oakville. This in- dicates an opportunity to attract the local resident labour market into Oak- ville employment oppor- tunities. Consequently, this un- derlines the chamber's call for building a resil- ient transportation net- work that works for all modes of transportation to supply the movement of goods and people. As the town embarks on finalizing its five-year strategy, the draft eco- nomic development strat- egy sends a strong signal that the town is willing to engage business to en- sure Oakville is known not just as a great place to live, but a great place to work and run a business.
