Following numerous re- ports of a low-flying air- craft around Halton on Aug. 21 people were left with questions. Turns out, the plane was part of the Annual Aerial Rabies Bait Drop by the Ministry of Natural Resources and For- estry. As part of efforts to pre- vent rabies spread in Onta- rio the government distrib- utes bait by air to a number of regions from Aug. 19 to Sept. 6. Since the beginning of the 2015 rabies outbreak, the first of its kind in more than decade in the prov- ince, the ministry has dis- tributed over 4 million vac- cine baits. The khaki-green col- oured bait is made of wax- fat with an attractant fla-fat with an attractant fla-f vour. A label with a toll-free telephone number, 1-888- 574-6656, and "Do not eat" are located on the exterior of the bait and a plastic package containing the liq- uid rabies vaccine is em- bedded in the centre. If found, the bait should notfound, the bait should notf be touched, but left for rac- coons, skunks and foxes to consume. The Oakville Beaver re- ceived dozens of reports of the planes flyover. One ob- server noted the aircrafts registration number and correctly determined it was registered to the Ministry of Natural Resources. The flight caused con- cern for many in the area where a low-flying plane is uncommon. Marc Lemieux, who lives in Oakville, estimate the plane was less than 100 feet in the air when he sawfeet in the air when he sawf it. "We were on our drive- way and it came over the house and you could hear it. Me and my wife were standing in our front yard and all of a sudden we could hear this noise of a plane but we've never heard them that close. All of a sudden we looked up and it comes up from behind the house and it does a sharp bank and goes directly over our driveway and we are stand- ing there just in awe looking at it. It freaked us out a bit," said Lemieux. For further information about rabies in Ontario, please visit www.Onta- rio.ca/rabies or contact MNRF's rabies information line at 1-888-574-6656.
