John David Meaney, - the People's Party of Cana- da candidate for the Oak- ville riding - and several supporters, attended Kerr- fest on Saturday, Sept. 7 in hopes of connecting with voters. The annual outdoor mu- sic festival, which is orga- nized by the Kerr Village Business Improvement Ar- ea (BIA) and sponsored by the Town of Oakville, takes place in the Kerr Village and attracts thousands of people. Meaney says he and his campaign team were wear- ing PPC T-shirts and he was handing out a few of his PPC business cards to at- tendees at the event. All this did not go unno- ticed and before long Mea- ney said he and his people were escorted out of the fes- tival by Halton police at the request of Kerr Village BIA officials. Some of the interaction was captured on video: "They say we were solic- iting, but we weren't," said Meaney in a Twitter video. "Freedom of speech is dead in Canada, as far as I'm concerned. This is ridic- ulous." Oakville North-Burling- ton PPC Candidate Gilbert Jubinville was also present when the group was re- moved. "We paid our $5. We should be allowed to talk to people," he said in a Twitter video from the event. "We're not causing any problems. We're just hand- ing out business cards. So I really don't understand what happened." Meaney argued his group's removal was unfair as Conservative Party of Canada Oakville riding candidate Terence Young was present at Kerrfest, as was Oakville MPP Stephen Crawford. When contacted Doug Sam, the executive director of the Kerr Village BIA, de- clined to comment stating the matter has been re- ferred to Elections Canada. "On a side note it is a fed- eral election year and not a provincial one," he said. "No one else tried to bring materials in to hand out." This is the second time in just over two months that Meaney and his cam- paign team have been kicked out of a public event in Oakville. On July 1, Meaney, clad in a PPC shirt, was asked to leave the town's Canada Day celebration after his people handed out balloons to passersby while Meaney greeted attendees and gave a brief introduction of him- self and the party's plat- form. Like at Kerrfest, other federal election candidates were present, but were al- lowed to stay.
